The War of the Ring is in all honesty not the best place to set any kind of open ended game, as the very premise rests on any original character not being important enough to get a place in the Red Book of Westmarch. Unlike most fantasy MMOs, LotRO is based on an 80+ year old series of books, which have a definite start and end to the narrative. The Lord of the Rings Online is as MMOs go, kind of an odd duck.

The Third Age mod for Medieval Total War is big enough to have gotten mods for the mod, as has Rome Total War's Fourth Age mod.īut since I'm extremely tired of playing Total Warhammer, and Immortal Empires is still absolutely bloody ages away, I will instead play this. In my opinion, the biggest successes Lord of the Rings games have had would be Total War mods. I myself used to play, as Mandaloregaming put it, the other Lord of the Rings RTS, The War of the Ring. There's the cult classic The Hobbit game from 2003, and Battle for Middle-Earth, which surprisingly enough still has a fairly active multiplayer community.
Unfortunately, video games actually based off Tolkein's work have, thus far, been somewhat of a mixed bag. It's influence is everywhere, from unoriginal fantasy novellas, to tabletop games, and of course, video games. To those living under at least three layers of rocks, Jolkien Rolkien Rolkien Tolkien's excuse for somewhere to put his conlang is one of, if not the, cornerstones of fantasy fiction in the world.
Let's be honest, the Lord of the Rings is cool.
